Every other day there is some or the other festival, big deal or not, being celebrated is some or the other part of the country. From the beginning to the very end of a year, each month is accompanied with a plethora of reasons and festivals to celebrate and stir up our lives. Makar Sankranti is a Hindu religious festival celebrated in the month of January, observed according to the solar cycle. Makar Sankranti has geographical, astronomical and social significances. Astronomical significance being that Makar Sankranti marks the change of the Sun sign into Capricorn (‘Makar’ rashi) on its celestial path. India is an agrarian country and Makar Sankranti is celebrated during the harvest time, therefore Makar Sankranti is also a festival during which the farmers and the consumers thank the Sun God for a healthy harvest and pray for the same in future. This festival marks a new beginning full of hope and the end of long cold nights.
